India set 299 to win

India require 299 runs from 83 overs to win the first Test in Bangalore. Australian captain Ricky Ponting declared his side's innings closed just five overs into the morning session.

Shane Watson was the sole casualty as Australia chased quick runs, inside edging Ishant Sharma onto his leg stump while attempting a hoik over midwicket. Watson was earlier dropped by Indian skipper Anil Kumble on the very first ball of the day, Kumble grassing a regulation return catch.

Brad Haddin and Cameron White added 25 runs in less than four overs before Ponting declared, perhaps a little earlier than expected by many pundits.
